I thought today I would throw some of my wisdom out to you guys and give you my top 5 tips for surviving uni. So here goes!
1. Make friends. And then make more friends.
University is COMPLETELY different to highschool. University puts you in the same room as 100s of other people around your age who are at least somewhat interested in the same thing as you. Use this to your advantage and talk to new people. Some of my friends and I met because we were forced to talk to each other by a lecturer and it was the best thing that ever happened to us (not sure if they would say the same but they are stuck with me now).
2. Make the most of the Gym facilities.
Having a free gym on campus is AMAZING. Use it to your advantage to a) avoid the fresher five* and b) freshen up the mind. Exercise is what I need in times of stress. No matter how busy I think I am a trip to the gym is always important. Plus its free…
*Fresher five is all that extra weight you take on board with the stresses of your first year at university.
3. Work hard, Play hard.
University isn’t cheap. That is unless you’re lucky enough to be new to uni in NZ (lucky bast**d’s getting it for free). So work hard but also make sure you have fun along the way. You need to balance both.
4. Go to the costume parties!
Seriously! The costume parties are so much fun. I think some advice I could give along with this is to mix up who you dress up with if you can. I have been to multiple events and not once have I dressed up with exact same group of people. One time I even dressed up on my own. Everyone is creative in their own ways and mixing it up allows you to vibe with different people.
5. Remember it’s not the end of the world.
I know nobody likes to fail and that ‘failure’ means different things to different people but honestly if you fail it is not the end of the world. I do believe that everything happens for a reason. If you decide uni just isn’t for you that should not be frowned upon either. There are so many ways of being successful and we are lucky to live in the 21st century.
So there’s my 5 tips. I hope that at least one tip was useful! As I write more you will realise that I probably should have included “don’t stress too much” as a sixth but I didn’t think I could be much of an advocate for that.
